Overview

Soweto, which stands for South Western Townships, is a large, vibrant township located on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa. Here are some of the things that make Soweto unique:
Rich history: Soweto played a pivotal role in the fight against apartheid. In 1976, student protests that began in Soweto spread throughout the country and became a major turning point in the struggle for racial equality. Soweto is also home to the Hector Pieterson Museum, which commemorates the 1976 uprising, and the Mandela House, where Nelson Mandela lived for many years.
