Zelve was first inhabited by humans during Neolithic times (around 10,000 BC). Over the centuries it was occupied by different civilizations, including Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Romans and Byzantines. During these times it was used as both a settlement and a place of worship. The earliest remains date back to 8th century BC u2013 making it one of the oldest known human settlements in Asia Minor. nIn 1923 an earthquake destroyed most of the buildings in Zelve Valley u2013 but luckily many were still standing when the area was declared an open-air museum in 1957.
