Believed to date back to the Roman and early Byzantine periods, the underground city was carved into soft volcanic rock and used as a shelter during times of invasion and unrest. Built in 1231 during the reign of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, it once served as a secure resting place for merchants and caravans traveling between Asia and Europe.nnThe caravanserai features an impressive stone portal, a large courtyard, and a covered hall where travelers and their animals could find shelter, food, and protection. Its solid architecture and detailed stone craftsmanship reflect the power and architectural sophistication of the Seljuk period.
