Overview

It is the winter of 1773, and Boston simmers on the edge of revolution. You have just been sworn into the Sons of Liberty and handed a coded cipher. From the steeple of the Old North Church, through Paul Revere’s house and the halls where patriots first dared to speak, follow the hidden trail down to the harbour — and uncover the cause the cipher was protecting before the British close in.
Blending real Revolutionary history — the Boston Massacre, the Old State House, the Tea Party — with a conspiratorial spy mystery, every stop reveals the true story of the landmark while advancing the intrigue. Augmented reality brings the clues to life on the cobblestones and facades, with audio narration in 32 languages. Start whenever you like, go at your own pace, pause for photos. Itinerary

  • Begin at the Old North Church (1723), Boston's oldest church, where two signal lanterns once warned of the British advance. Here the Sons of Liberty hand you the cipher and its first hidden word.

  • At the Paul Revere House (c.1680), the oldest building in downtown Boston, from which the silversmith set off on his midnight ride, you uncover the next word.

  • Beneath the gilded grasshopper of Faneuil Hall (1742), the 'Cradle of Liberty' where patriots first dared to speak, you decode another word.

  • Boston Massacre Site

  • Before the lion and unicorn of the Old State House (1713), from whose balcony the Declaration of Independence was first read to Boston, you decode the next word.

  • At the Old South Meeting House, where 5,000 colonists gathered on the night of the Boston Tea Party, you uncover a word of rebellion.

  • Behind the Egyptian Revival gateway of the Granary Burying Ground, resting place of Adams, Hancock and Revere, you decode a word kept beyond the grave.

  • Conclude at the Tea Party Ships, where patriots dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbour on December 16, 1773. You decode the final word and reveal the cause the cipher was hiding.
