Overview

Summer is the perfect time to visit Churchill, Manitoba. During the months of July and August, the Churchill River is teeming with beluga whales who migrate into the warm, shallow waters to give birth and feed on fish. Known as the “canaries of the sea”, these friendly and inquisitive creatures will capture your heart as you enjoy their whale song by boat or, for the more adventurous, in the water with a Zodiac, kayak or stand-up paddleboard adventure.

While on land, enjoy the view as the surrounding landscape erupts into colourful summer blooms. You will experience a dog carting excursion with a professional musher on a mile-long trek through the boreal forest and explore the Churchill Wildlife Management Area by Tundra Buggy for your chance to see a multitude of northern wildlife. You might even have the opportunity to see the first of the summer polar bears as they begin their migration into the area.

Itinerary

  • Guests will arrive into Winnipeg and check into their hotel at the Winnipeg airport.

  • Early morning flight to Churchill followed by a Churchill and area tour where a guided bus tour of Churchillu2019s most notable sites, including the Polar Bear Holding Facility and Inukshuk can be seen. Guests will then visit the Parks Canada Visitor Centre, followed by free time to explore Churchill.

  • Boat tour of the Churchill River. Discovernhundreds of beluga whales by boat and enjoy a tour of Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site.

  • Itsanitaq Museum has a collection of Inuit carvings and artifacts that are among the finest and oldest in the world dating from Pre-Dorset (1700 B.C.) through Dorset, Thule and modern Inuit times. Manitoba Heritage Council plaques commemorate the presence of Pre-Dorset and Dorset peoples who lived in this area from 3000 to 1000 B.C. The gift shop specializes in northern books, Canadian Inuit art, unique postcards, art cards, stationery and local wildberry preserves.

  • Parks Canada Visitor Center

  • Discover hundreds of beluga whales by kayak on an excursion into the Churchill River beluga whale estuary in a single or double kayak

  • Enjoy a guided interpretive tour of Prince of Wales Fort National Historic Site. The stone fortress was conducted by the Hudsonu2019s Bay Company to assist in controlling the Hudson Bay.

  • Dog carting and interpretive program. Learn about Mu00e9tis culture, the history of dog sledding and enjoy an exhilarating dog cart ride.

  • Search for summer wildlife on a Tundra Buggy adventure in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area. Evening flight to Winnipeg; Guests will check into their Winnipeg hotel.

  • Guests may depart Winnipeg at their leisure
