From the fairy chimneys in Gu00f6reme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia to the incredible cave churches at the Gu00f6reme Open-Air Museum, this region offers a variety of stunning sights.

• Start your exploration of Cappadocia at this UNESCO World Heritage Siteu2014a magnificent valley filled with rock-carved churches and monasteries. Built during the Byzantine period, this historical settlement was a home to monks and a pilgrimage destination. Be awed by the intricate construction of the cave rooms and churches etched into the honeycomb landscape. The museumu2019s highlight is the Dark Church which is decorated with brilliantly colored frescoes that have been carefully preserved. Visit in the early morning for fewer crowds and join a guided tour to learn more about the siteu2019s history and architectural secrets. A separate ticket is required for the Dark Church.

• Cappadociau2019s wind-sculpted volcanic tufa has created an impressive series of valleys, dotted with towering u201cfairy chimneysu201d and dramatic rock formations. Taking its name from the pigeonholes carved into the tops of its fairy chimneys, Pigeon Valley (Gu00fcvercinlik Vadisi) is stunning, and visitors to Cappadocia shouldnu2019t miss it.

• Smaller than Cappadociau2019s other subterranean cities like Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, Ozkonak Underground City (u00d6zkonak Yeraltu0131 u015eehri) makes for a less crowded, more intimate travel experience. Built around the time of the Byzantine Empire (and at one point home to some 60,000 residents), this hidden gem was rediscovered in the 1970s by a local farmeru2014and it has served as a fascinating tourist attraction ever since.

• Honeycombed with tunnels, the twin slabs of volcanic tuff rock known as Uchisar Castle (Uu00e7hisar Kalesi rear up above the little town of Uchisar and Cappadociau2019s dramatic landscape in mesmerizing style. Climb the stairs to savor dramatic views across the surrounding valleys, which are spectacular at sunsetu2014as is the castle itself.
