Step onto the plaza and the buildings around it drop you back nearly 200 years u2014 original adobe structures and reconstructed 19th-century storefronts sit side by side, from the Whaley House to the old schoolhouse to the working blacksmith shop. The general store is stocked the way it would have been in the 1800s, penny candy and all u2014 kids and adults love picking out their favorite candy by the ounce. Browse the Mexican market for textiles, pottery, and craft you won't find at a mall, then, if you're hungry, enjoy authentic Mexican food. If not, no worries u2014 plenty of other chances to fill your belly at our next stop.

• u2693ufe0f Liberty Station is San Diego's past and present side by side. For most of the 20th century this was a working naval training center u2014 thousands of sailors passed through here u2014 and the base was decommissioned and reimagined rather than torn down. Walk the grounds and the original 1920s architecture is still intact, repurposed into galleries, studios, and shops instead of barracks. Pop into the Public Market for a browse u2014 local vendors, small-batch everything, delicious foods of all kinds, the kind of stop that's easy to lose thirty minutes in. From there, your choice: a tasting flight at Stone Brewing, a boutique pour at Caruth Cellars, or both if you're feeling ambitious. Walk it off along the waterfront, where the bay views open up and the pace slows down. Feeling competitive? There's a quick 9 or 18 holes of mini golf right on site if the group's up for it. Equal parts history, shopping, food and drink, and open time to just enjoy the water.

• u2600ufe0f Cabrillo National Monument sits at the tip of Point Loma, marking the spot where Juan Rodru00edguez Cabrillo became the first European to set foot on what's now the West Coast of the United States, back in 1542. The views alone are worth the drive u2014 San Diego Bay, the downtown skyline, and the Pacific on the other side, all from the same bluff. Walk up to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, still standing since 1855, and get the story of the sailors who once used it to navigate a coastline with no other markers. Weather and tide permitting, head down to the tide pools below u2014 genuinely one of the better tide pool spots in Southern California, and a fantastic spot for a selfie or family photo. Depending on the season, this stretch of coast is also a solid spot for whale watching, gray whales migrating close to shore. Part history lesson, part hike, part the best view in San Diego most people never get to.

• Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the closer for a reason. Miles of rugged, undeveloped coastline carved by decades of erosion into sea caves, arches, and dramatic cliff drops u2014 no boardwalk, no gift shop, just raw Pacific coastline the way San Diego looked before any of it got built up. Schedule permitting, we'll plan to be here as the sun sets and enjoy the spectacle of a beautiful San Diego sunset. Walk the cliffside trails for views up and down the coast, watch surfers working the break below, and if the tide's right, more tide pools tucked into the rocks. Take another family photo, selfie, or just gaze into the abyss of the Pacific. You might even see dolphins, whales, or osprey diving into the ocean as they hunt for fish. We'll part ways here after a memorable sight seeing day or you'll be driven back to your lodging, whatever you selected.
