The walk begins in the modern part of the city. Within a few minutes, we will reach the Sassi district, the famous and ancient quarter of Matera recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will explore the entire neighborhood, strolling through its magnificent alleys and scenic viewpoints.
This historic district of Matera is characterized by cave dwellings carved directly into the limestone rock. It is renowned for its picturesque narrow streets and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Unlike Sasso Caveoso, Sasso Barisano features houses built above ground rather than carved into the rock. It is known for its unique architecture and charming cobblestone streets that wind through the heart of Materau2019s old town.
