Overview

Drive Sonoma County yourself, with a GPS audio guide that plays automatically as you go. Your booking unlocks the whole region in the free Wine Trails app: pick your date and starting point — Sonoma Plaza, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa or Sebastopol — choose the cellar doors you want from 76 across the county, and the app builds your personal route with turn-by-turn narration. 96 narrated stories cover the county’s people and places: as you pass the Sonoma Plaza you’ll hear how a flamboyant Hungarian who called himself Count Agoston Haraszthy founded Buena Vista east of the plaza in 1857, then returned from Europe with over 100,000 cuttings of 300 grape varieties and seeded an entire industry. No group, no schedule, no guide — pause for a long lunch in Healdsburg, replay anything, and the audio keeps working when the signal drops. You’ll need a car and a designated driver; tastings are booked and paid directly with the wineries.

Itinerary

  • California's first commercial winery, founded in 1857 by the Hungarian emigre Agoston Haraszthy, who imported 300 European grape varieties and built stone cellars into the hillside east of Sonoma Plaza.

  • Six generations of the Bundschu family have farmed this Rhinefarm estate since Jacob Gundlach planted it in 1858, making it the oldest family-run winery in California.

  • A 1920s country house at the foot of Sugarloaf Ridge in Kenwood, where winemaker Richard Arrowood pioneered single-vineyard Chardonnay in California in the 1970s.

  • Tom Jordan built this Alexander Valley chateau in 1972 to make Cabernet and Chardonnay in the Bordeaux manner, and the estate still releases only those two wines.

  • Samuele Sebastiani arrived from Tuscany in 1895, worked the local quarries, and bought his first cellar in 1904; the family name has been on Sonoma wine ever since.

  • Three Bohemian brothers built this Russian River estate in the 1880s on the site of their old logging camp, and it has made bottle-fermented sparkling wine there ever since.
