They are descendants of West African slaves who escaped from plantations and formed independent communities known as Maroon Towns. These communities preserved their African roots and the Maroon culture is known for vibrant music, dance, storytelling, herbal medicine, and cuisine. The annual Maroon festivals provide a glimpse into these traditions, with drumming, dancing, and great food on offer.’

Itinerary

  • Our first stop is at Sun Valley Plantation, a charming little farm that showcases the bounty ofnJamaica's fertile land. You'll stroll through the gardens, marvelling at the bright colours of the tropical flowers, and sampling the fresh fruits and vegetables that grow there. You'll also learn about thentraditional farming practices that have sustained Jamaican communities for generations.

  • Community walk (from Chales Town basic School to the Maroon Museum).The Charles Town Basic School, a charming little school nestled in the heart of the Charles Town Maroon community, will be the meeting point for your community walk to the museum.

  • Whilst at the Charles Town Maroon Museum, you'll delve deeper into the fascinating history of the Maroons. The museum is home to a wealth of artefacts, including traditional clothing, weaponry, and musical instruments. You'll learn about the Maroons' long struggle for freedom and their important role in Jamaica's history.

  • After our visit to the museum, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch in a beautiful and tranquil spot that overlooks the stunning coastline. As you savour the flavours of Jamaica's famous cuisine, you'll soak in the breathtaking views of the turquoise sea and lush greenery that surrounds us.
