Itinerary

• Meet your guide near the elegant Ivan Vazov National Theatre, located in the heart of Sofia. After a short welcome, you will receive your audio guide equipment and instructions on how to use it. Once everyone is ready, the group will begin exploring Sofiau2019s main historical and cultural landmarks.

• Stop in front of the former Royal Palace, today home to the National Art Gallery. Learn how this elegant building became one of the most important symbols of Bulgariau2019s modern history after the country regained its independence. Discover its connection with the Bulgarian royal family and see one of Sofiau2019s most impressive historic buildings in the heart of the city.

• Visit the Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle-Maker and learn more about its history and religious significance. The church also has a small crypt, which we may visit when the group size allows it. As the crypt is very small and religious services are often held there, access may not always be possible.

• See the Monument to Tsar Liberator, one of Sofiau2019s most important historical monuments, dedicated to Emperor Alexander II and Bulgariau2019s liberation from Ottoman rule. The monument stands directly opposite the current building of the Bulgarian Parliament, making this stop a good place to learn more about Bulgariau2019s modern political and national history.

• During our tour, we visit Sofiau2019s most iconic landmark, the magnificent St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Learn why it was built, who it commemorates, and how it became one of the most important symbols of the Bulgarian capital. Step inside to admire its impressive interior, richly decorated icons, mosaics, and Orthodox atmosphere.nnIMPORTANT! During the summer months, visitors wearing shorts or clothing with uncovered shoulders may not be allowed to enter the cathedral.

• Visit St. Sophia Church, one of the oldest and most historically important churches in the Bulgarian capital. Learn how the church gave the city its present-day name and discover the layers of history hidden beneath and around the building, including remains from earlier Christian structures and ancient Serdica.nnDuring the tour, we stop here to explore the church and its historical significance. Access to the interior may depend on religious services or other events taking place at the time.

• See the monument dedicated to Tsar Samuel, one of the most important rulers of the First Bulgarian Empire. Learn about his reign, Bulgariau2019s struggles with the Byzantine Empire, and why he remains such a significant figure in Bulgarian medieval history. The monument is also known for its striking illuminated eyes, which make it one of the more unusual modern monuments in central Sofia.

• Discover the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre of Serdica, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites hidden beneath modern Sofia. Learn how ancient Serdica developed during the Roman period and how the amphitheatre was used for public spectacles and entertainment. This stop helps you imagine the scale and importance of the Roman city that once stood beneath todayu2019s capital.

• Walk through the remains of Ancient Serdica and discover the Roman city hidden beneath modern Sofia. See preserved streets, building foundations, and archaeological structures that reveal how important Serdica once was within the Roman Empire. Learn how the ancient city developed and how its ruins became part of todayu2019s city center.

• See Banya Bashi Mosque, one of Sofiau2019s most important Ottoman-era landmarks and the cityu2019s only functioning mosque today. Learn about its history, architecture, and the role of Sofiau2019s Muslim community, while discovering another layer of the cityu2019s multicultural past.nnWe do not enter the mosque during the tour, as access is not always available and the visit requires additional time for removing shoes and following the rules of an active place of worship. If you would like to see the interior, you are welcome to return and visit the mosque independently after the tour.

• Stop by Sofiau2019s famous mineral springs, located near the former Central Mineral Baths. Learn why the city has been known for its natural hot mineral water since ancient times and how the springs have played an important role in Sofiau2019s development.nnYou will also see locals filling bottles directly from the public fountains, where the warm mineral water still flows today.

• Visit the St. George Rotunda, one of the oldest preserved buildings in Sofia and an important early Christian monument. During the tour, we enter the Rotunda and learn about its long history, from the Roman period to its later use as a church. Admire its unique architecture and discover the remarkable frescoes that have survived from different historical periods.

• Finish the tour in front of the Presidency of the Republic of Bulgaria, one of the key government buildings in central Sofia. Learn more about the role of the institution and the surrounding historic area.nnAt this final stop, you will also have the chance to see the changing of the guard, one of the most distinctive ceremonial moments in the city center.
