• TURTLE HATCHERY.one of srilankau2019s most important breeding spots for the endangered sea turtles. The sandy beaches serve as sanctuary for several types of marine turtles including LOGGERHEADS and the LEATHERBACK turtle. The small turtle hatchery first opened in 1994, in an effort to promote responsible tourism and conservation. The hatchery buys turtle eggs off fisherman, in an attempt to discourage them from poaching and selling eggs. You will be educated on the importance of protecting turtle life, via the hatcheryu2019s facilities that care for new born turtles until they are ready to be released back in to the ocean, an experience that you may even have the opportunity to do yourself first hand.

• Traditional masks have played an important role in Sri Lankan culture and folklore for centuries. Used for both theatrical performances and rituals, these masks are carefully handcrafted by skilled craftsmen who have learnt the art from their forefathers. The Ariyapala Mask Museum in Ambalangoda is an excellent way of learning and understanding mask making that is unique to Sri Lanka. The museum has a workshop and library which is specifically designed to introduce the richness of the mask tradition of Ambalangoda.

• One of the main highlights is Galle Fort, which offers a charming reminder of the Dutch colonial era. Constructed in 1663, the fort encompasses a remarkable collection of European architectural structures and Sri Lankan traditions, and was named a world Heritage site in 1988.There is also the Galle National Museum, with a selection of ornamental objects made of ebony, tortoise shell, ancient wood and lace on display.

• Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka, known as u201cthe Pearl of the Indian Oceanu201d. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a u2018pettau2019 tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. Although the approach looks primitive and ancient,
