Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact thatu00a0Gregory the Illuminatoru00a0was initially imprisoned here for about 14 years by Kingu00a0Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory subsequently became the king's religious mentor, and they led theu00a0proselytizingu00a0activity in the country. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared au00a0Christian nation.u00a0u00a0It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia.
Noravank was founded in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes, a former abbot ofu00a0Vahanavanku00a0near the present-day city of Kapan inu00a0Syunik. The monastic complex includes the church of S. Karapet, S. Grigor chapel with a vaulted hall, and the church of S. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). Ruins of various civil buildings andu00a0khachkarsu00a0are found both inside and outside of the compound walls. Noravank was the residence of theu00a0Orbelianu00a0princes. The architect Siranes and the miniature painter and sculptoru00a0Momiku00a0worked here in the latter part of the thirteenth and early fourteenth century.
